it is a relatively modern Martial Art however, its original basis, the Korean disciplines of Soo Bahk Ki and Tae Kyun, date back centuries. A Karate-based Korean Martial Art, Tang Soo Do combines the elements of Shotokan, Subak, Taekkyon, and Kung Fu.

With a focus mainly on unarmed techniques and self-defense, as both a traditional and classic Martial Art, its primary purpose is to develop the physical, mental and spiritual aspects of a human being. It’s believed that the integration of the mind, body, and spirit helps to create a person free from inner conflict and who is able to deal with the outside world with integrity in a mature, forthright, intelligent, and virtuous manner.

The Meaning of Tang Soo Do

The word ‘Tang’ represents the Tang Dynasty of China which, reflects the shared cultural background between China and Korea. ‘Soo’ signifies hand but, implies defensive strike; and ‘Do’ indicates the way of life or art. Therefore, it translates to the Korean classical Martial Art that was influenced by the Tang method of Martial Arts – ‘The way of the Tang’s hand’.
